Counteracting myopia in children with myopia management

All over the world, more and more children are becoming short-sighted at an increasingly early age. Children today spend a lot of time at school and less time outside. We also use our eyes more and more for close-up work, eg for books, tablets and smartphones.

Together with one or even two short-sighted parents, these are the reasons why short-sightedness, also called myopia, is occurring at an increasingly early age and is becoming more and more common.

Why is myopia a problem?

A short-sighted eye is longer than a normal eye and this can lead to numerous problems and limitations, especially later on. Glasses are thicker and heavier, contact lenses are more difficult to adjust and so you simply spend more money on visual aids.

But even more important are the consequences for eye health: short-sighted people have a significantly increased risk of going blind. The reason for this is serious eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration or even retinal detachment.

What treatment methods are available?

The progression of myopia cannot be stopped completely, but it can be slowed down. The earlier treatment is started, the better, ideally as soon as even one eye has mild myopia. Treatment is usually recommended up to the age of 18, but in some cases it may be useful for longer.

There are various means and methods available for this, such as special eye drops or contact lenses. There are also special glasses available today that relieve the eye and can influence the growth in length. This is then as easy as wearing glasses.

What can I pay attention to in everyday life?

During the process of learning to see, myopia, or becoming short-sighted, can be slowed down by making small changes in everyday life. Every minute in the fresh air is valuable; it is best to spend at least two hours a day outside in daylight.

Close work is also an important factor: the further away things are perceived from the eye, the better. This means that reading a lot is not always a good thing, and watching TV on a traditional TV is better than watching a film on a tablet.
